On Wednesday, July 15, Obie-awarding winning actor and writer Roger Guenveur Smith joins us from his home in Los Angeles to share excerpts from “Otto Frank,” the latest in his ever-evolving stage repertoire. Smith will also share reflections about his artistic practice and the moment in which we all find ourselves.

As a steward of his daughter Anne Frank’s legacy, Otto Frank navigated loss, adolescent ambition, and the criticism of those who questioned his motivations, the authenticity of the diary, and even the Holocaust itself. Smith’s narrative is an intimate meditation, complicated by Frank’s simultaneous service to both the living and the dead.

Broadcast live from the artists’ living room to yours and hosted by TIOH Arts & Culture’s artistic director Diana Wyenn, this 30-minute virtual performance will be live-streamed for free on our Facebook page as part of TIOH Arts & Culture’s @home series.

Roger Guenveur Smith adapted his Obie Award-winning solo performance of A HUEY P. NEWTON STORY into a Peabody Award-winning telefilm. His Bessie Award-winning RODNEY KING is currently streaming on Netflix. His prolific body of work for the international stage also includes studies of Frederick Douglass and Christopher Columbus; Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix; iconoclast artists Jean Michel Basquiat, Simon Rodia, and Charles White; and baseball greats Juan Marichal and John Roseboro. He has devised historically-driven travelogues of Iceland, Panama, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Miami, and San Francisco. Roger studied at Yale University and Occidental College, and has taught at both institutions, as well as Cal Arts, where he directs his Performing History workshop.
